What's the difference between Internal Medicine and Family Medicine? 

Internal medicine will only see patients 18 yo and older and Family medicine sees patients of all ages.

What department do we schedule express care video visits under? and where does the pt need to be in order for us to schedule? 

We schedule the express care video visits under CGD dept. 

The pt needs to be in the states of California in order for us to schedule.

How do you schedule a procedure appt for an Internal Medicine patient?

We do not schedule procedure appointments (patients would be referred to a specialty department for the procedure)

What is the age requirement to establish care in Geriatric Medicine?

65 Years old and up

If a pt has Anthem Pathway HMO and is assigned to UCSD Medical Group, what locations can they be seen at? 

Community Clinic Locations only.

Does express Care and Urgent Care provide IV? 

Express care does not provide this service. Urgent Care does but only for Dehydration and it would be up to the providers discretion

If a patient is referred to Primary Care Psych, who are the providers we schedule them with and what guarantor do we use? What do we need in order to schedule? 

PC Psych Providers: Dr Kurtis Lindeman & Dr Julie Le.

We use the BH Guarantor account and they would need an approved referral.

What kind of lab collections can be done at UCSD draw stations/ labs?

Blood draws, Urine, Stool &Sputum

What is the correct workflow to follow if the pt has an HMO-POS RTE insurance response? 

Confirm if the pt is wanting to use their POS benefits, Call the ins to verify if the pt has out of network POS benefits & add that to the appt notes and Guarantor notes.

If they do not have OON benefits, then we decline scheduling and or provide a GFE

If a patient is assigned to an affiliated provider, can they be seen at Urgent Care and/or Express Care?

Yes, patient can be seen at either Urgent Care or Express Care

What locations are you able to use the re-establish care visit type at?

When are you able to use this visit type? 

UPC internal and LWC Internal Medicine Clinics


We can only use this visit type then the provider leaves the clinic and the pt would need to re- establish care with a new PCP in the clinic.

Which locations are you able to schedule a new patient appointment with a NP or PA? 

Community Clinic Locations: VTC, VIS, EBC, PHR, BKH & EAS

What elements on a lab order do you need in order to schedule the appt? 

The lab order must show Active- Future.

The order must not be expired or past the expiration date, or on or after expected date. 

Class should be listed under lab collect.

Resulting Agency must show: UCSD Laboratory Systems.

What Medicare Advantage plans do we accept for Primary Care? 

Medicare A&B, Medicare B & Medicare PPOs using in and or out of network benefits

What imaging services do the express care and urgent cares offer? 

Only X rays

How do you schedule an IUD removal and what visit type do you use? 

We don't schedule these types of appointments we send a message to the procedure scheduler to contact patient for appt scheduling. Please also confirm order/ referral are on file.

What are the subspecialties we schedule for? 

Sports Medicine, Primary Care Psych, Coumadin Clinic, Menopause Clinic, Fall Prevention, Family Med Pharm MD, PREP, Pain Clinic, OB.

When scheduling GTT lab appts, what visit type do you use, and what are the fasting instructions? 

We use the GTT [2510] Visit type

Fasting instruction are no food or drink about 8-12 hrs before the draw, Plain water and plain black coffee are ok no cream or sugar.

What is the difference between "On Exchange and Off Exchange" 

The "Exchange" is another name for Covered CA

"Off Exchange"= Not through Covered CA

"On Exchange"= Through Covered Ca

What insurance does the Express Care take? 

They follow Primary Care Community Clinic Insurance Guidelines. HMOs assigned to UCSD Medical Group, PPOs, and no Medi-Cal type plans

What Primary care office provides sleeps studies and what is the workflow for scheduling. 

Vista Primary Care offers this service but only Vista patient are able to be referred / seen for this here. if it is a Vista pt that is referred then we send a message to the Vista MA nurse pool for pt contact to schedule. if it is not a Vista patient, we send a message to the PCP ma nurse pool asking them to revise the referral and send it to UCSD Sleep Medicine.
