When the net was put over the ape, the ape was unexpectedly calm and peaceful, so the captain ordered the crew to take the net off.

the wood they have is not lighter than water, so the raft will sink.

In the beginning of the story, the captain does not want to kill the ape because he does not approve of being the one to shoot the ape, but in the end of the story the captain strangles the ape and throws him off the side of the boat.
