It has forests of pine, oak, and cedar trees, as well as unusual plants such as curly grass fern and broom crowberry.  It has unusual animals such as the timber rattlesnake and the Pine Barrens tree frog.  It has the largest area of open space in New Jersey, about 1.1 million acres.  Underground lies a large reservoir of fresh water.
