I am a short volcano made of ash & cinder, very explosive

What is a Cinder Cone Volcano?

100

This type of lava has moderate viscosity, as it cools under water.

What is pillow lava?

100

I am the products of a cinder cone volcano.

What are Ash and cinders?

100

Cinder cone volcanoes

What is explosive eruptions?

100

Discuss how magma, lava, and igneous rock are related.

Magma and lava are melted rock.  Magma is below the surface, lava above ground.  Both become igneous rock when they cool and solidify.

200

I am a volcano that has collapsed at the summit

What is a caldera?

200

This type of lava has low viscosity.

What is pahoehoe lava?

200

I am the product of shield volcanoes.

What is lava?

200

Shield volcanoes

What is quiet eruptions?

200

Discuss the Pacific Ring of Fire as it relates to plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes

The pacific ring of fire is where the Pacific plate converges with other plates, creating volcanoes as well as earthquakes.

300

I am made of layer of lava.  I am the the largest (broadest) volcano.

What is Shield volcano?

300

This type of lava has high viscosity.

What is aa lava?

300

I am a super heated gas cloud created by an explosive eruption.

What is a pyroclastic flow?

300

Composite volcanoes

What are BOTH quiet and explosive eruptions?

300

Compare and contrast pyroclastic flow and lahar

Both come from volcanic eruptions.  P. flow is a superheated gas cloud that comes down at speeds of over 100mph bringing gases and debris that can kill people instantly.  A lahar is a mud flow that is created by melted ice and snow from the eruption.

400

I am made of alternating layers of lava and ash& cinders.

What is a composite volcano?

400

Name the substance that determines the viscosity of lava flow.

What is silica?

400

When a volcano erupts and is is covered by snow and ice, this may form.

What is a lahar?

400

I am the silent supervolcano in the western United States, waiting to erupt.

What is Yellowstone?

Explain how volcanic activity and its processes of formation extends beyond Earth.  name at least three other locations that have extra terrestrial volcanism.

Earth is not the only place with volcanoes/lava flow.  Other examples include our moon with melted rock from asteroid impact, Venus with the most, and many active volcanoes, Mars with volcanoes, including the largest, Olympus Mons, and Jupiter's moon Io , which is the most active in our solar system.

500

I am the largest known volcano in the solar system.

Name me.

What is Olympus Mons (on Mars)?

500

Define viscosity.

What is the resistance to flow?

500

I am any solid material resulting from a volcanic eruption.

What is tephra?

500

In May of 1980, there was a famous eruption in the United States.  Name that volcano.

What is Mt. St. Helens?

Explain how Subduction volcanoes and Hot Spot volcanoes differ

Subduction volcanoes are explosive and usially made from andesitic rock ( from continental plate) which are high in silica, thus explosive.  Hot spot volcanoes typically are formed from basalt rock ( on the ocean floor) away from plate boundaries and low in silica, thus not very explosive.  Subduction is more common than Hot spot volcanoes.
