  1. Know the four causes of World War 1 and be able to explain why each cause started WW1.  



  • Cause #1:  Trouble in the Balkans.

War in the Balkans had partially caused WWI. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was also killed in the Balkans (Serbia, to be exact). Austro-Hungary wanted war against the Balkans, so WWI rose.

  • Cause #2:  Rise of the German Empire

Otto von Bismarck unified 39 unused states to form a Dominant Military. Germany also showed Britain “Who’s Boss” with their Military. Germany was economically rising too, so the other countries wanted to put a stop to Germany.

  • Cause #3:  Alliances

Alliances was a cause because it brought other countries into fights. Since countries were allied with other countries, it brought them into the war.

  • Cause #4:  Imperialism 

Imperialism was a big cause because the European countries were all fighting for land in Africa.

The three new weapons in WWI were Poisonous Gas, Machine Guns and Tanks.

The new weapons in WWI were the Machine Gun, Tanks and Poisonous Gas. The Machine gun was an automatic artillery weapon that could take out swarms of enemy troops. Tanks were used to clear an important base or to blow up certain land. Poisonous Gas was used to secretly and quietly kill soldiers by toxicating the air.

Franz Ferdinand was important because his assasination was a cause of WWI. He was assassinated in Sarajevo.

  1. What is The Schlieffen Plan?  Why was it important?



The Schlieffen plan was to first attack France, and then circle around Germany. After that, they would take out Russia. Russia, though, moved too fast because they were on horses. That was why this plan didn’t work. It is also important because when they invaded Belgium, Belgium asked Great Britain for help. This plan was what brought Great Britain into WWI.

The Fourteen Points was a list of principles that Germany had to follow so that peace could be made to end WWI. The League of Nations was made up of the Allied Powers. They created the Treaty of Versailles. The League of Nations was formed to maintain World Peace.

The Treaty of Versailles led to WWII in numerous ways. The Treaty of Versailles took too many soldiers, so if they were attacked, Germany could not protect themselves. They also blamed Germany for things they didn’t do, like start the war by themselves. They lastly had to give up loads of money, so many German people were left starving (which aggravated the German government).

The Russian Revolution had an effect on WWI because it put an end to fighting on the Eastern Front.

Armistice Day ended the fighting of the war, so the soldiers didn’t have to keep fighting when the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The Treaty of Versailles was the formal ending of the war, and was a Treaty of the 14 points that Germany had to follow, to end the war. They are different because Armistice day was the end of the fighting, and the Treaty of Versailles was a list of the 14 points Germany had to follow to end WWI.

Meatless Tuesdays and Wheatless Wednesdays were both optional programs to save up food. The saved up food would be given to soldiers as a meal. It was organized by President Herbert Hoover. Americans were told that “Food will win the war”, so that food would be sent to soldiers.

The trouble in the Balkans devastated WWI because the Balkan wars almost completely wiped out the Ottoman Empire. The rise of the Germany Empire also devastated WWI because it put pressure on other countries and frightened weaker countries. Alliances devastated WWI because it brought all the other countries into WWI. Imperialism lastly devastated WWI because it killed many people in Africa who were forced to fight in WWI.

  1. Know who Luke Frank, Alvin York and The Harlem Hellfighters were.



Luke Frank was an American fighter ace in WWI. He was the first airman to receive the Medal of Honor. He shot down 14 enemy balloons and four airplanes.

Alvin York was a war hero. After his rifle jammed, he led an attack on a German Machine gun nest. He killed at least 25 soldiers and captured 132.

The Harlem Hellfighters was the 369th Infantry Regiment. They spent more time in combat and despite their bravery and courage, they returned home to racism and segregation from their countrymen.
