What are the two charges, and which ones attract and repel?
Positive and negative, opposites attract, same ones repel
What materials do you need for the milk experiment?
What materials do you need to make Suminagashi art?
A container of water, paint, paper, and a paintbrush.
What is the nickname for the lizard that can run on water?
Jesus Lizard.
What is the atomic number?
The number at the top of each element.
In a water molecule, how are electrons shared?
Electrons are shared unequally.
What happens if you touch the q-tip to the milk with nothing on it?
Nothing happens.
What type of paper is best for making prints of Suminagashi?
Paper that has not gone through a process named sizing, which means it will not absorb the paint but allow it to be shown on the surface.
Why are water striders found in slow-moving or still areas of water rather than in a riffle?
Water striders are found in slow-moving or still areas, rather than in stream riffles, because in stream riffles, the water is moving fast and does not really have a surface because it is constantly churned up, so the water strider wouldn’t be able to walk on water in riffles.
What does the atomic number show?
If the element is balanced, it shows the number of protons and electrons.
Why does the water in the balloon hold the shape of the balloon for a few frames after being popped?
It holds the shape of the balloon because the water molecules are so attracted to each other that they stick together for a few frames, and then gravity takes hold and it splashes down.
What do you see happening if you touch the q-tip with soap on it into the milk?
The colors from the food coloring would spread all over the place.
When you use two brushes to create circles within circles, what are these circles called?
The circles are called concentric circles.
How is the water strider able to walk on water?
The hairs on the ends of its legs do not break the surface tension of the water.
What is the scientific name of CO?
Carbon dioxide
How is polarity different from an ionic compound?
Polarity is different than an ionic compound because firstly, in an ionic compound an electron is given away instead of being shared, and in an ionic compound electrons are not shared unequally, so there are not two poles.
What is happening on the molecular levels when you touch the q-tip with soap on it into the milk?
What kind of projects can you do using Suminagashi from the video? (Name 2)
It can be used for drawing on, collage work, a journal cover, a frame, a card of any sort, and to decorate a scarf.
What is a unique movement you might see from the Whirlgig beetle?
A unique movement might be to rapidly whirl and gyrate on the surface of the water.
What is the chemical name of AlN? (For clarification, the first element is AL, but the L is lowercase, and the second is N.) BONUS: If you name CH4 (4 is a subscript) correctly, you get an extra 300 points!
Aluminum nitride
BONUS: Methane
How does electronegativity affect polarity?
Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract electrons. This influences polarity because if there are two atoms with different levels of electronegativity, then the one with the stronger attraction will pull the other atom in and share electrons unequally, which makes poles form and that is how it influences polarity.
Why does the food coloring continue to move a little bit even after you take the q-tip out of the milk?
Since milk is made up of water and fat, fat and water repel each other, so after the water molecules explode outward after being repelled by the soap, they continue to bounce off of milk molecules that are floating around and this will cause the food coloring to continue to move around for a little bit longer.
In what ways can you use a paintbrush and the dots in the package described in the video to actually control you art?
By dropping the dots in the water, you can then drop the paints on them which allows them to float on the surface of the water. Then, using a paintbrush, you can stir currents up in the water that allows you to push the color where you want them. It isn’t very accurate, but you would still have some control over the paint.
What is the water strider’s method of finding and obtaining food?
The water strider’s unique method of finding and obtaining food is feeling the vibrations the insects make on the surface of the water and eating them.
What is the 47th element on the periodic table?
Silver.
