Always wash hands and SUPERVISE children with animals at all times! Make sure children wash hands prior to interacting with the animal and after interacting with the animal or the animals things. Supervision of the interaction is key, even if the children are familiar with the animal and the animal has never had a prior violent episode; both children & animals are very unpredictable.
