When someone is not paying attention to the topic being discussed in Speech class, we say ...?

You notice you are starting to turn into a young man. You want to share with your teacher the changes that are occurring with your body. Hmmmmm

Think it or say it?

Think it! It is good to know you may feel comfortable talking to your teacher, however personal matters such as this one, you may want to save to discuss with mom or dad! :)

You are in Speech class. You are looking around the room at the games on the shelf. The group is playing a would you rather activity. What part of the WEBB is not connecting?

Words? Eyes? Body? Brain?

Eyes for sure and possibly Brain! Your eyes should be looking at the person who is talking, not all around the room. Your brain might disconnect as well! Be careful!

Should we have a four or five day school week? What is your opinion and the reasoning behind it?

Good job! :)

You see a an acquaintance surrounded by a group of his friends. You edge your way into the group, interrupt the conversation and tell your acquaintance all about your new puppy dog. What type of thoughts are others having about your behaviors?

Red-weird Blue-good Purple-neutral?

Red-weird/uncomfortable

Barging into a group with an off-topic idea with people who are not your friends in not a good idea.

How could you casually join this group?

200

You see a student in the hall missing his left hand. You are very curious about what happened!? Shark bite? As you are walking up the stairs, you struggle with what to say or do.

Think it or say it?

Think it!!!- saying something about a person's difference is not ok. If you have a friendship with a person over time and you know they are open and honest about their difference, perhaps it may be something to talk about, but may not be as well. * It is also important to remember NOT to stare. This can make the person feel uncomfortable as well. People with physical differences wanted to be treated just like everyone else!

We are talking about pets in Speech class. You share with the group a new video game is being released on Friday. What part of the WEBB is not connecting?

Words? Eyes? Body? Brain?

Words! You are off-topic and not contributing to the conversation at hand.

200

Should there be a limit on how long you can play video games daily?

What is your opinion and the reasoning behind it?

Great! :)

What can you use in Speech class when you want to talk abut something that is unrelated to the topic being discussed. Instead of blurting your off-topic idea out, you could write it down where?

The Blurt Journal! On the board behind Mrs. D . and sometimes in the middle of the table, a Blurt Journal is available for you to get your ideas down without interrupting the flow of conversation in therapy. By writing it down, it may help you get it off your brain and get your attention back to the group discussion. Also, at the end of Speech, you are given time to share what was on you mind. :)

You recently read an interesting article about obesity and the effects it can have on a person's health. Your brain is on overdrive thinking about what you've just learned. When you see a friend, you instantly want to share your new info. Your friend is a over weight fellow.

Think it or say it?

Think it-Often times, we need to think about who we are speaking to, in order to guide what we should say. In this case, talking about obesity to an over weight person can make them feel awful, even if your intentions are good.

300

You are telling the class about your new video game. You tell them about all the characters, all the levels you've reached, and your scores for the last ten games you've played. No one is looking at you or asking any questions.

What part of the WEBB is not connecting?

Words? Eyes? Body? Brain?

Words! Cake style talker here! Caution! You are losing your audience! Ask them a question to get them interested or change gears all together to a topic you know they like!

300

What type of animals make the best pets?

What is your opinion and the reasoning behind it?

Awesome! :)

If you get stuck or upset by a change in your routine and are unable to come up with different ideas to make yourself feel better, you may be suffering from what tragic condition?

Rock Brain! Turn on your Flexible Thinking Brain, encourage yourself to be ok with the change, try to think in a new way. Being flexible when something is different than you are used to is a great way to navigate through life! Change happens, change is good! Try to roll with it! And remember, there are many adults in your life that can help you get comfortable with the change.

You are visiting your great aunt's grave with your family. While you are there, a friend sends you hysterical meme about kittens on your phone. You are dying to show your brother the text.

Think it or say it?

Think it! Using a Social Filter is also about considering where you are. Typically, a cemetery is a solemn, serious place where people often feel sad. Sharing a joke in that environment would not be appropriate, especially to those grieving.

400

You are in science class but all you can think about is your new puppy. You cannot wait to teach it some new tricks. You think about teaching it how to fetch your slippers and the treats you want to give it.

What part of the WEBB is not connecting?

Words? Eyes? Body? Brain?

Brain! Your brain rolled out of the group! Try very hard to focus on what the teacher is thinking. If you keep thinking about your puppy, we may get behind in the science lesson.

400

What subject do you wish they taught in school?

What subject do you wish was eliminated?

What is your opinion and the reasoning behind it?

Terrific!

Your teacher asks about your summer break and what you did with your time off? You reply, "Fine, nothing." This is an example of what style of talker?

Cookie Crumb Talker! You did not give your teacher enough information to have any sense at all of your summer. You need to offer more info. in order to make a good connection! Remember, we are striving for the "just right" cupcake talker. Beware of the Cake talker too! One -sided talking, giving too much information can result in an uninterested conversation partner. Remember to strive for even, balanced turns!

You just got back your test grade in math. You studied very hard for the test. This math test caused you a great deal of stress. You are so very relieved and excited to see you got a well earned A! You want to celebrate and share your good news with your best friend. You notice your friend looking very serious and quiet. He failed the test.

Think it or say it?

Think it! While you are feeling extremely happy about your grade, telling your friend may make him feel worse. Try to be more low key about it. Share your good news with some else out of your friend"s ear shot or at the very least, try to be casual and not braggy about your grade.

500

You are in class and you put your head down. You look down at your lap. You are listening to the lesson though.

What part of the WEBB is not connecting?

Words? Eyes? Body? Brain?

Body and Eyes! If your body is not connecting, your eyes cannot connect. Therefore, you are missing the subtle nuances of communicating. Sit your head up and Think with your eyes to get the full lesson!

What is your favorite part of every day during the school year?

What is your opinion and the reasoning behind it?
