The piles can have different numbers of coins in them, but they must contain an equal number of silver side coins in each. You CAN flip coins to change the side they are on, but with the lights out, you can't see if you are grabbing a silver side coin or a gold side coin. You can escape the trap by separating the coins this way.
Put any twenty coins into a stack and flip the stack. The number of silver coins in each pile will be 20 - x, where x is the number of silver coins you grabbed when you made the stack.
