Person-Centered Therapy

•Person centered therapy’s view of human nature is that people are essentially good. Because of this belief, clinicians who use person centered therapy ultimately allow the individual to decide what is right for them. This theory believes that people are a product of environmental and societal factors around them. People are shaped by the lessons that they get from growing up.

Person-Centered Therapy

•For clients who need a direct form of therapy, person-centered therapy is not best because the client is expected to lead the sessions. Person-centered therapy also may not be best for clients who are not able to think themselves through situations. Clients in this therapy must be willing and able to lead and talk themselves through there situations.

Adlerian Therapy

•Adler believed that people’s style of living is representative of their selected goals. The Adlerian theory believes that people create themselves rather than our childhood experiences shaping who we are. The Adlerian theory believes that people start to form ana approach to life within their first six years of life. The Adlerian theory believes that people are motivated primarily by being socially related.  Adler believed that human behavior was not determined by environment or genetics alone. Rather, we as humans can interpret, influence, and create our own events.

Adlerian Therapy

•Depending on the expectations of the client, Adlerian theory may be very disappointing. Many clients expect answers, but the Adlerian theory has an egalitarian approach that makes the client and councilor work together to find a solution. Also, if the client does not want to share personal family matters this may be a difficult form a theory to utilize.

Cognitive-Behavioral

•In modern cognitive-behavior therapy, the current view is that the person is the producer and the product of their environment. This is because is cognitive-behavioral therapy it is believed that the client’s thoughts are what control their behaviors and emotions. Cognitive-Behavior therapy aims to increase people’s skills so that they have more options for responding.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

•Being that cognitive-behavioral therapy is structured, it may not be a good fit for clients who have complex mental health needs or learning problems. Cognitive-behavioral therapy may involve dealing with emotions that may initially cause more anxious or emotionally uncomfortable.

Gestalt Therapy

•Gestalt theory is founded on a positive view of human nature. This theory focuses on helping the client to create an awareness of their feelings, reactions, and thoughts. This awareness can resolve the client’s personal issues. In short, this style of therapy believes that humans can solve our own problems. However, this can only happen when we are aware of what is happening.

Gestalt Therapy

•The biggest limitation of Gestalt therapy is that there is a limited supply of evidence-based studies that have been able to verify the theory. This has a lot to do with the fact that the founder Perls believed that discovering what works should never be determined by way of research. Another limitation is that this therapy can trigger intense emotions that may not be productive or helpful for all clients.

Solution Focused Therapy

•Solution focused therapy views human nature as people constructing reality through their language. This theory believes that people’s problems are maintained because of their perception of reality which distorts their natural competence and resources. In solution focused therapy it is believed that human nature is positive. It is also believed that human beings can alter themselves.

Solution Focused Therapy

•The biggest limitation of solution focused therapy is that it last for a very brief duration of time. This therapy typically last between 3 to 8 sessions. This does not leave much time for progression. Also, there is not much evidence-based research that has been done on this form of therapy.
