How does a cochlear implant get implanted?

In order to implant a cochlear implant, you need to be sedated.  A surgeon puts an internal piece (electrode array and magnet) through the middle ear and into the inner ear to stimulate the auditory nerve directly.  An external piece attaches to the internal piece through a magnet.  The external processor processes the sound.
