What's a main idea?
The main idea is the most important thought about the topic of what is written. It is the overall "point" of the paragraph. The main idea is usually in a sentence, and often the first sentence. However, it can be located in different places in the paragraph so make sure you listen carefully. The rest of the sentences in the paragraph are supporting details, because they "support" the main idea.
