Conditions of Homestead Act

WHAT IS 

The Act gave anyone over the age of 21 or the head of a household the opportunity to own 160 acres of land for only a small registration fee. 

People who took advantage of the  Homestead Act had to live on the land for at least five years, build a dwelling at least 12 feet by 14 feet and improve the land in some way usually by growing crops.
