Individuals who deviate from the norm to such an extent that special educational services are required.
Who are the exceptional children?
How individuals work together or a style of interaction among professionals.
What is collaboration?
Students whose primary language is not English and who have yet to achieve proficiency in English.
Who are English Language Learners?
Occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling services, psychological services, transportation, etc.
What are some examples of related services?
Ended "separate but equal" schools for white and black students. Used as a precedent for arguing that children with disabilities cannot be excluded from a public education.
What is is Brown v. Board of Education?
An incapacity to perform as other children do because of some impairment in sensory, physical, cognitive, or other areas of functioning
What is disability?
The design of curriculum materials, instructional activities, and evaluation procedures to provide access to students with widely varying abilities and backgrounds.
What is universal design of learning?
A situation in which a greater number of students from minority groups are placed in special education programs than would be expected based on the proportion of pupils in the general school population.
What is overrepresentation?
A separate or isolated classroom for children with disabilities usually found in a public school.
What is a self-contained classroom?
State must guarantee a free public education to all children with intellectual disability ages 6–21 regardless of degree of impairment or associated disabilities.
What is Pennsylvania Association of Retarded Children v Commonwealth of Pennsylvania?
Difficulties imposed by the environment on a person with a disability.
What is handicap?
A group of professionals from different disciplines who function as a team but perform their roles independent of one another.
What is a multidisciplinary team?
A situation in which fewer children from minority groups are placed in special education programs than would be expected based on the proportion of pupils in the general school population.
What is underrepresentation?
A written plan developed by a team that coordinates services for infants and their families.
What is Individual family service plan (IFSP)?
All children, regardless of the severity of their disability must be provided with an education appropriate to their unique needs at no cost to the parent(s)/guardian(s).
What is Free Appropriate Public Education?
Children ages 3 to 9 who perform significantly below developmental norms.
What is developmental delay?
A written detailed plan developed by a team for each pupil aged 3–21 who receives a special education.
What is an Individualized Education Plan?
AN educational approach whereby students whose first language is not English are instructed primarily through their native language while developing competency and proficiency in English.
What is bilingual education?
A broad term used to describe the movement of an individual from one education environment to another, from one class to another, or from one phase of life (high school)to another (independent adulthood).
What is transition?
Children with disabilities are to be educated, to the maximum extent appropriate, with students without disabilities.
What is the Least Restrictive Environment?
An individualized instructional program designed to meet the unique needs of an individual learner.
What is special education?
Providing customized services uniquely crafted to meet the individual needs of youngsters with disabilities ages 3 to 5.
What is early childhood special education?
The attitudes, values, belief systems, norms, and traditions shared by a particular group of people that collectively form their heritage.
What is culture?
An instructional approach in which special education teacher and a general educator teach together in a general education classroom to a heterogenous group of students.
What is co-teaching or cooperative teaching?
A national law that protects qualified individuals from discrimination based on their disability that is defined as a person with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity, who has a record of such impairment, or who is regarded as having such impairment.
