Pompeii

     Thousands of years ago, Pompeii was a city in Rome. In the summer of 79 A.D., a volcano exploded. Ash and stone covered the city like a blanket. For hundreds of years, the city was hidden under the ash and stone. Nobody knew it was there! In 1748, scientists began digging around Pompeii. They found that the ash of the volcano had kept the city looking just like it did thousands of years ago. Scientists found things like jewelry and pots. The Dog and His Reflection

     A Dog, to whom the butcher had thrown a bone, was hurrying home with his prize as fast a he could go. As he crossed a narrow footbridge, he happened to look down and saw himself reflected in the quiet water as if in a mirror. But the greedy Dog thought he saw a real Dog carrying a bone much bigger than his own. "I want that bone," the Dog thought to himself.

To the Edge of the Lake

     Adam paddled as hard as he could, but it was too difficult. This was a big problem. Adam was in a little boat in the middle of the lake and he was stuck. He motioned to his dad who was standing at the edge of the lake. His dad just gave Adam a thumbs up sign and encouraged him, "You can do it, Adam!" he said.

     In preparation for this boat trip, Adam had practiced paddling with an oar when he and his dad visited the lake. He took a deep breath and tried again thinking about what his dad had taught him. Adam slipped the oar into the water like it was a knife cutting a piece of cake. Then he turned the oar and tried to scoop the water out of the lake. It worked! The boat started to move. Adam did the same motion again. He slipped the oar into the water and scooped. He paddled on one side of the boat and then the other side.

     Adam raised his head to look at his dad. He could not believe it, but he was actually almost to the edge of the lake. He could see the enormous smile on his dad's face. "I knew you could do it son!"

How much television do you watch a week? Maybe you watch five hours a week. Maybe you watch five a day. That is over 30 hours of TV a week! What would your life be like without TV? One organization wants you to find out!
     In 1995, TV Turnoff Network started an event. It is called TV Turnoff Week. The goal is to get people off of their couches. People can use that week to get active. They can draw, ride a bike, or play a game.

Belling the Cat

     The Mice once called a meeting to decide on a plan to free themselves of their enemy, the Cat. At least they wished to find some way of knowing when she was coming, so they might have time to run away. They lived in such constant fear of her claws that they hardly dared stir from their dens.

     Many plans were discussed, but none of them was thought good enough. At last a very young Mouse got up and said:

     "I have a plan that seems very simple, but I know it will be successful. All we have to do is to hang a bell around the Cat's neck. When we hear the bell ringing we will know immediately that our enemy is coming."

Evaporation

     The process in which water turns into water vapor and rises is called "evaporation." Heat from the sun causes water in the oceans and rivers to evaporate. The water vapor hovers near the earth's surface and then slowly rises into the atmosphere as it gets warmer.
     Water in oceans and rivers is continuously evaporating. This continual evaporation of water would decrease the water level in these sources if the water did not fall back down in the form of rain.
     When the vapor rises into the atmosphere, it meets cold conditions. The colder temperature causes the vapor to collect in the form of heavy drops. Clouds are formed when the water vapor collects into drops. The heavier the drops, the darker the clouds. When these drops become heavy enough, they fall on the earth in the form of rain or snow. In this way, the water returns to the earth and the cycle begins again.

The Underground Railroad

     The Underground Railroad did not have anything to do with trains. It was a way for slaves to escape from the South and find freedom in the North.This “railroad” was made up of roads that slaves could follow at night.There were safe places called “stations” for the slaves to stay during the day. These places gave food and shelter to the slaves. The people who protected the slaves were called "conductors."
     One famous conductor was Harriet Tubman. Being a conductor was very dangerous for her because she was an escaped slave. She was willing to risk her life in order to help other slaves. The Cat-Maiden

     The gods were once arguing whether it was possible for a living being to change the way it acts. Jupiter said yes, but Venus said no. So, to try to answer the question, Jupiter turned a cat into a maiden and gave her to a young man for a wife. The wedding was performed, and the young couple sat down to the wedding feast.

     “See,” said Jupiter to Venus, “how nicely she behaves. Who could tell that yesterday she was but a cat? Do you agree that she has changed the way that she acts?”

Dolphins are protected animals. Laws have been passed to keep them from being harmed. But the same laws that help the dolphins can cause problems for fishermen. Fishermen use nets to catch fish for grocery stores and restaurants. Nets make the work go faster, and fishermen catch more fish to sell. It would take a very long time to catch a lot of fish with a fishing pole. The dolphin laws say that fisherman cannot use a certain net anymore because it is dangerous to dolphins. Dolphins are mammals, and they need air to live. If they were to get caught in these nets, they might not be able to swim to the surface to breathe air.
     Dolphins live in the same areas as big fish. Dolphins often swim and play with schools of tuna. Just like the tuna, they can get caught in the fishermen's nets. Fishermen do not want to catch or harm dolphins. Today, fisherman follow a fishing style using different nets that will not harm dolphins. It is difficult, but the fisherman are careful to only catch tuna and not dolphins. As a result, the dolphin population is growing.

Phoebe's Valentine's Day

     Selma went to school with her backpack filled with Valentine cards to give to everyone in her class. When she got to school she showed her friend Phoebe all of the Valentine cards. Phoebe's face turned red, and she covered her mouth with her hand. Phoebe had forgotten all about Valentine's Day!

     Selma put her hand on Phoebe's shoulder and tried to make her friend feel better. The school bell rang, and Selma and Phoebe had to take their seats. Selma raised her hand and asked her teacher when they were going to pass out their Valentine cards. Selma could see Phoebe sink lower in her chair.
