This is most likely due to 2nd class men having to wait for all women, all children, and first class men to board. On top of this, a rumor spread amongst the second class men that the port side of the ship was allowing 2nd class men on lifeboats. They rushed over, only to find this rumor false. Ultimately, only 14 2nd class men survived.
The Captain was set to remain in charge of the Titanic until the White Star Line completed a larger and finer steamer. It was only fitting, then, that he went down with the ship.

Despite some reports saying the contrary, he was following maritime law and company policy by keeping the ship at maximum speed. Furthermore, reports of the ice field likely did no reach the captain.

She died in May of 2009 as the oldest living Titanic survivor.
