Strategies for learning ASL

  • Build a language community (Don’t miss class and when outside of class sign with your fellow learners in ASL class in ASL)

  • Minimize talking in class (The more you talk and rely on your voice the harder it is to learn. This is hard at first.)

  • Focus on meaning not individual signs (if you miss a sign don’t focus on that but focus on what the meaning there signing)

  • Focus on face not hands (do this for 2 reasons. Grammer is more in the face and its rude to look away from a signers face)

  • Show understanding (develop active listening skills. This will increase your skill of understanding)
