A colon often serves as a signal to the reader that one of the following is about to occur: (1) a list is about to be given; (2) a long quote is about to follow; (3) a quote that lacks explanatory words such as “he said” or “she asked” is about to be introduced, or (4) a greeting to a business letter was just stated.
A semicolon can properly separate two independent clauses that are closely related.
