Please only schedule housing support appointments for the homeless, couch surfing, and/or students who are about to be homeless.

*If a student is not homeless or couch surfing, please provide as much support to them as you can and make referrals to AFS/Housing Justice/etc. first and foremost.

It is a financial assistance is available students who are dealing with financial hardship resulting from an emergency, accident, or other unexpected critical incident that has a direct impact on their academic success.

What is WASFA?

The Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) is for people who don’t file a federal FAFSA application. If you have completed the FAFSA, you have already applied for federal and state financial aid and do not need to complete the WASFA unless your college asks you to.

What can the emergency aid cover?

This is dependent on the type of fundings available at your college. 

Types of expenses that are usually covered:

  • tuition and books 
  • groceries
  • transportation and gas
  • healthcare
  • childcare
  • utilities (internet, phone, electric bills, etc.)
  • rent and housing expenses

Who should apply for WASFA?

A person should complete the WASFA if they are undocumented or do not qualify for federal financial aid because of their immigration status. The WASFA can also be used in limited circumstances by other select applicants who cannot or choose not to file a FAFSA. 

International Students are not eligible for federal student aid from the U.S. Department of Education.

A Student came in upset that they were denied rent assistance. They're confused as to why they are not eligible this year, as they received rental assistance 3x last year. What do you do? 

You refer them to American Financial Solutions. 

  1. Please call AFS at 1-888-864-8699 to speak with one of their HUD certified housing counselors.
  2. Please call AFS Monday - Friday 6am to 6pm
  3. When you call, please let them know that you were referred to them from United Way of King County's Benefits Hub program.

A student calls you with a complaint about the Benefits Hub. What do you do?

  • Validate their feelings and let them know you are listening.
  • Ask for time to resolve issue/misunderstandings or support them with the issue if you have the answer.
  • Bring in your coach leads/supervisors/campus coordinator depending on the situation.
  • Document this conversation in Apricot service notes and enrollments for proof/reminder of the student's issue and their expectations of response.
