Jacob wants to make an eye model. He has a magnifying lens, a flashlight, a piece of paper, and a donut. How should Jacob arrange these objects to make an eye model? In a real eye, light travels through the corneal lens, goes through the pupil, and reaches the retina at the back of the eye.

Flashlight, Magnifying Lens, Donut, Paper

Shelly has an idea for a new superhero that she’s calling “The Muscle.” Shelly tells you: “The Muscle doesn’t have a skeletal system - they have no bones! Because they don’t have any bones to get in the way, The Muscle is super strong. When The Muscle meets supervillains, they always win the battle and survive.” Do you agree with Shelly that The Muscle would be a strong superhero? Do you think they would survive a battle with a villain? Why or why not? Support your argument with reasoning.

No, I do not agree with Shelly. Muscles and bones work together as a system to give our bodies strength. Bones attach to muscles with tendons and that allows our muscles to move. Without a skeleton or bones to attach to, we couldn’t use our muscles. We would just be a bag of skin, muscles, and other organs that couldn’t move. The Muscle would not be a strong superhero.

What is it called when scientists learn about body parts by cutting apart and observing bodies?

Dissection

Darius closely examines the eyes of different animals. He notices that cats, owls, and raccoons have much larger pupils than blue jays, humans, and coyotes. Darius makes the claim that the reason cats, owls, and raccoons have larger pupils is because they are predators. He says that predators have large pupils because the main function of pupils is to help animals search for prey and survive. Do you agree with Darius? Why or why not? Support your answer with evidence

No, I do not agree with Darius. Some of the animals that have small pupils, like coyotes, are predators. Raccoons are omnivores and eat all sorts of things in the trash. So I don’t think they are predators, but they have large pupils. All the animals with large pupils are active at night. All the animals with small pupils are active during the day. I think this is the reason why some animals have larger pupils. Larger pupils let more light into the eyes, so those animals can use the dim light of the Moon to see at night.

400

What are the strings that make bones move?

Tendons

400

What causes "red eye" in flash pictures?

Blood vessels in the back of your eye.

What type of nerves run INTO your brain? What type of nerves run OUT FROM your brain.

Into - sensory nerves

Out from - movement nerves

400

If you tried to use an eye model at 10:00 pm, what would happen?

The eye model won’t work as well because there won’t be as much light to illuminate objects

500

How is the human body similar to a robot? List at least 3 examples.

*Any appropriate answers from page 1 of lesson 1 notes*

500

What are the two main reasons someone may be blind?

Damage to the cornea lens, and damage to the retina.

500

Explain how your eyes adjust to "adjust" to darkness allowing you to see better.

Your iris muscles open up the pupil so that any extra light that’s in the room can enter your eye, allowing you to see better.

500

Your brain is the most mysterious part of the human body.  Give two examples of what scientists DON’T know about the brain

How does the brain store memories? Why do we dream?

500

When making an eye model, if the picture on your "retina" page is blurry, what could you do to make the image crisp and clear?

You can change the distance between the retina and the cornea lens.
