How does a CT scan machine work?

It’s a machine that makes use of a series of 2D x-rays that are taken from different perspectives, then cross-sectioned to create a 3D image.

100

What are the risks (side effects / dangers) involved in getting an MRI scan?

There are not real side
effects; it’s mostly painless and risk-free.

100

Who is the video intended for (what audience)?

For patients

100

Who shouldn’t have a CT machine take an image of them (what types of people)?

Pregnant women

200

What are the risks (side effects / dangers) involved in getting a CT scan?

low possibility of cancer; reaction to the contrast material (similar to an allergic reation: itchiness, hives)

200

What is used to make it easier to see what is happening in the image taken of the body?

Contrast material that is inserted by injection, solution or inserted rectally.

200

Who shouldn’t have an MRI machine take an image of them (what types of people)?

Pregnant women, people with pacemaker or metal implant.

200

What are PET scans usually taken of?

They are used to measure blood flow, oxygen use and glucose metabolism. PETs obtain functional information; shows problems at a cellular level.

300

What are the risks (side effects / dangers) involved in getting a PET scan?

Exposure to radiation can possibly cause health problems; also, allergic reactions to the injected tracers can happen.

300

What does the narrator say about the nuclei of water atoms?

They move out of position when hit by a magnetic wave and emit their own radio wave which is used by the scanner to create the image.

300

Why does the narrator talk about the earth in the video?

To compare the magnetic waves of an MRI to the magnetic waves of the earth; MRI waves are 10,000-30,000x stronger than earth’s magnetic wave.

300

What’s a benefit of CT scans compared to MRI scans? How about MRI scans compared to CT scans?

CT scans create higher resolution than an MRI scan; MRI scans are safer because they don’t use ionizing
radiation, which has been linked to cancer, though the possibility is low.

400

Are CTs used to take images of bones to determine if they are broken?

No – but to determine muscle /
bone disorders, yes.

400

What are CT scans usually taken of?

Internal structures and organs, to determine
injuries from trauma, or other diseases like cancer.

400

How does a PET scan machine work?

With the use of a special dye with radioactive tracers in it. The dye is taken by the patient. It is absorbed by organs and other tissues in the body. The PET scanner can then read what is happening in the body by making use of the radioactive tracers in the dye.

400

How should patients prepare for a PET scan?

Patients need to tell doctors about: 1. If they have any
major health problems, and 2. If they are pregnant. Sometimes they won’t be able to eat for 8 hours
before having a PET scan.
