Why is this artifact significant to American history?

Henry Clay’s statue is important because it represents someone who kept the Union together through a time of division and conflict. Even though he was a prominent factor in keeping the Union together for a while, he could only do so much to keep the balance. War would be inevitable. Despite his failure to keep the Union together, he was still an extremely important politician in American history because he prevented the conflict for some time. He also attempted to reach the presidency 5 times.

How does Henry Clay and his statue exemplify a cause of the Civil War?

Henry Clay, the “Great Compromiser”, attempted to stop conflict about slavery between the North and South and managed to prevent the Civil War from happening sooner. He came up with the Missouri Compromise to stop the dispute between the North and the South about whether Missouri should be admitted as a free or slave state. He proposed that Missouri should become a slave state, while Maine should become a free state, in order to keep the Union together and keep the balance between the number of free states and slave states. He also came up with the Compromise of 1850. It allowed California to become a free state, pleasing the North, and allowed the New Mexico and Utah territories to decide whether to allow slavery, pleasing the South. It also banned the slave trade in Washington D.C., but slaveholders there would be allowed to keep their slaves. It also created a new fugitive slave law, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, that made it easier for slaveholders to find and recapture runaway slaves. Both of these compromises held off civil war for a while, thanks to Clay, but conflict was inevitable, especially when the Dred Scott decision declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.
