Youth have identifies that they felt much better when they were connected to professionals beyond their caseworker. Support from a community agency was seen by youth as a better match to their needs, since they were able to access ongoing support, to checkin, ask for advice, or celebrate successes even after the program had ended.

What risks are associated with youth transitioning into independent living?

There are lots of risks associated with youth transitioning into independent living; 


  • In comparison to their peers, youth aging out of foster care are at higher risk for mental health and substance abuse problems, homelessness, involvement with the criminal justice system, unemployment, and dependence on social assistance. They are also more likely to leave school without graduating and become a parent at a younger age (Charles &Oliver 2012).

Help regulate them in difficult times such as when coming back after a home visit or after a difficult day at school.

How do youth benefit from strengths focused practice?

The Youth begin to feel a sense of control over their own thoughts, attitudes and attributions. The youth begin to look at the glass as half full instead of half empty. The youth will begin to see failures as unique events.

Explain how experiential education would help the youth you would be working with?

Experiential education is a process through which a learner constructs knowledge, skills and values from direct experiences. It is very important to reflect with the youth/participants after completing an experiential education activity to ensure that the desired educational or therapeutic goals have been met or at least discussed.
