(from slides) Many of the region’s traditional dances were derived from Spanish folk dances. These were couple dances in which partners were arranged in scattered formation on the dance floor. Strict social codes prevented the dance partners from touching; they remained at about 2 feet apart and maintained their connection by moving together and apart, changing places, and keeping eye contact.

Narrative themes in the dances included entertaining tales of courtship and courtship rituals.

How did the Cold War allow ballet to spread to the United States?

Ballet spread to the United States during the cold war in two distinct ways.

1. Russians who were escaping the communist revolution came to America and began performing in places like California and New York.

2. As part of a cultural exchange/education program in the 1950s, Soviet Union and American companies sent their ballet dancers to each other's countries to propagandize their ballet. This increased the popularity too.

(from slides) vThe most elaborate versions of the Sun Dance took place within or near a large encampment or village and required up to a year’s preparation by those pledging to dance.

As the community gathered, specific individuals erected a dance structure with a central pole that symbolized a connection to the divine, as embodied by the sun. Sometimes the dances would continue for several days and nights and the pledges were prohibited from eating or sleeping as a means of seeking spiritual insight or power.
