Though women could not vote in the 1872 presidential election, Anthony insisted on casting a vote. She was arrested, tried, and given a fine of $100. Continuing with her strategy of civil disobedience, Anthony refused to pay the fine. Though Anthony died fourteen years before the 19th Amendment to the Constitution finally gave women the right to vote, she was instrumental in bringing about that change.
