What is the difference between thumbnails and roughs?
Thumbnails are small, quick sketches that are used for brainstorming at the beginning of the design process. Multiple thumbnails should be created at once.
Roughs are a more detailed version of a thumbnail sketch that is drawn to the actual size of the final design.
Define the following terms, and describe the difference between the two:
- Ascender
-Descender
Ascender: The part of certain lowercase letters that extend above the x-height in a typeface. (Ex: b, d)

What are TWO differences between a JPG and a PNG file?
Both files are raster file types. However:
JPGs have a smaller file size than PNGs
PNGs support transparency options; JPGs do not.
PNGs use lossless file compression, JPGs use lossy file compression.
What are the measurements for the two following sizes of paper?
- Letter
- Tabloid
Letter: 8.5x11", often used for fliers or text-heavy documents, such as essays.
Tabloid: 11x17", most commonly used for posters, or for cutting down to smaller dimensions

What is the difference between lossy and lossless file compression?
Lossy compression reduces file size by discarding some data, which will deteriorate the quality of the file or image overtime.
Lossless compression reduces file size without any data loss, preserving the original quality.

- X-Height
- Ascender Height
- Descender Height
