X, a film, was released in 1939. The Hollywood studio MGM pulled out all stops for the movie, spending $3 million on production. The film won two Academy Awards, and catapulted its lead actress into stardom. At the same time, the film is popularly thought to be cursed due to many events that happened during production. Some of these include:

1. A cast member was essentially poisoned by his makeup, which was made of pure aluminium dust.

2. The snow on set was made from asbestos.

3. A botched special effects scene ended with multiple people on fire.

Alaipayuthey is a 2000 Tamil film starring Madhavan and Shalini, and directed by Mani Ratnam. The characters fall in love against the backdrop of 90s Chennai, particularly on the city’s suburban trains, elope, and overcome the tensions of married life. The film featured songs by A. R. Rahman.

In 2015, Mani Ratnam released another Tamil movie with many references to Alaipayuthey, but with a modern spin. This movie also featured music by A. R. Rahman, and was a commercial success.

This film was remade in Hindi in 2017, once again featuring music by A. R. Rahman. It was criticised for being a frame-by-frame remake of the Tamil version of the film. Interestingly, the film features a popular remake of a 1995 song by A. R. Rahman, for the Tamil film Bombay, directed (once again!) by Mani Ratnam.
