What is the scope of practice?
allows you to plan for your future medical care, in the event you're ever unable to make decisions for yourself.

What is denial of services?
any act or omission by a physician during the treatment of a patient that deviates from accepted norms of practice in the medical community and causes an injury to the patient.
What is malpractice?
intentional and unauthorized physical contact or procedures performed on a patient without their consent.
What is assault and battery?
when a healthcare professional verbally shares incorrect and harmful information about a patient's medical condition with others
What is slander?
a healthcare professional shares incorrect and harmful information about a patient's medical condition with others through writing or pictures.
What is libel?
A health problem you had before the date that new health coverage started.
What is a preexisting condition?
the area of law that addresses possible illegal actions taken and must be proven in court beyond reasonable doubt. Healthcare providers can be found liable or responsible for their actions.
What is Criminal Law?
laws and regulations that govern the interactions between private citizens, or in the case of healthcare, between the practitioner and patient.
What is Civil Law?
when a health care provider does not maintain the security and confidentiality of patient records.
What is Invasion of Privacy?
falsely accusing someone of a crime in a health care setting.
What is Defamation?
gives workers and their families who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by their group health plan for limited periods under certain circumstances
What is the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA)?
a doctor failed to react or act accordingly to a patient's illness or injury, or that an act he or she took was indeed negligent, and the outcome resulted in additional harm to the patient.
What is a breach of contract?
A document with important information about a medical procedure or treatment, a clinical trial, or genetic testing.
What is a consent form?
an allegation that a healthcare professional or someone employed by the provider intentionally restricted a patient's movement unlawfully.
What is false imprisonment?
refusal of an insurance company or carrier to honor a request by an individual (or his or her provider) to pay for health care services obtained from a health care professional.
What is denial of payment?
the costs of employer-furnished first aid and medical facilities, including personnel or retainer fees for nurses and physicians that are not allocated to individual claims.
What is contract?
the disciplined study of morality in medicine and was concerned with the obligations of physicians and healthcare organizations to patients as well as the obligations of patients.
What are ethics?
A type of advance directive that states the specific types of medical care that a person wishes to receive if that person is no longer able to make medical decisions because of a terminal illness or being permanently unconscious.
What is a living will?
when the patient has chosen a plan and effectuated coverage by paying the first premium payment and ending the coverage effective after the date the coverage was effectuated.
