Border Ruffians (pro-slave) and Northern abolitionists rushed into Kansas.Border Ruffians raided Lawrence , Kansas causing violence to erupt.John Brown , an abolitionist , carried out the violent execution of 5 pro slave men. Abolitionists and Americans were shocked by the violence.Americans believe that popular sovereignty does NOT work.

Dred Scott

Was a slave who lived in free territory and sued his own freedom.The supreme court decided:

-He was NOT a citizen but property and could not legally sue

-The Missouri Compromise was no longer valid-Congress could NOT stop slavery in new territories 

Northerners were shocked.They believed slavery was only in the south and could be contained there.After the supreme court decision, Northerners realized they needed to act now to stop slavery.
