What does it mean to blurt?  And what are three strategies you can use to help you not blurt in class.

Blurting - is when we talk out of turn, or say something without using our social filter.  You can raise your hand - wait to be called on, write your thoughts down on paper, observe the room (ex. is it appropriate time to talk out loud/what is everyone doing), take a pause - think about how others are going to react

The teacher told us to put our cell phone in a box in the front of the room.  The teacher stepped away from his desk to talk to someone at the door and was not facing the desk.  I see my phone at the top of the box. (Take it or Leave it)

Leave it.  Teacher gave you a directive and asking you to leave your cell phone in the box so you can focus on learning. Taking it back without asking is sneaky and they will be consequences if you get caught

It is pizza party in class, the teacher told everyone to come up and get a slice of pizza.  I see that there are 2 extra slices in the box, I am hungry. I really want to have another slice. Your teacher hands you a series of 15 math word problems, you complete it and hand it in. Your teacher summons you to his desk after you complete it and says, “You did a pretty good job, you got most of the answers correct. You only got 3 wrong. I want you to go back and try those 3 problems again.  I circled the words you need to focus on so you know if it is an addition or subtraction problem.  You respond, “ God, why do you always do this to me. I am not doing this again, bruh!”

Attitude. Your teacher is trying to help you learn. He circled the words in the problem and gave you a compliment.  You can say,

Take it or Leave it

Leave it.  This is not your personal property.  You need to ask permission to ask someone else to use their earbuds.
