What is the national flower in India?

What is the Lotus?

It's not just a pretty flower; it holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in India. Here's why:

  • Symbolism: The lotus represents purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration, and rebirth. It grows in muddy water but blossoms into a beautiful flower, symbolizing the journey of the soul from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge.
  • Religious Significance: The lotus is associated with many Hindu gods and goddesses, like Lakshmi (goddess of prosperity) and Brahma (the creator god). It's also significant in Buddhism, representing purity of body, speech, and mind.
  • Art and Literature: You'll find the lotus depicted in ancient Indian art, architecture, and literature. It's a recurring motif in sculptures, paintings, and even yoga poses (think of the Padmasana or lotus pose).
