What is popular sovereignty?

It is the concept that the people of the territory decide on the issue of slavery.

Describe the Kansas-Nebraska Act. 

Stephan Douglas knew he needed to offer something that the East did not provide so he came up with the Kansas-Nebraska Act which allowed for popular sovereignty and citizens to decide on their opinion for slavery. It eventually repealed the Missouri Compromise.

Describe the economies of the North and the South. 

The South had soil that was suited for farming. And their economy was based on cash crops grown on plantations. The North depended on raw goods grown by enslaved Africans in the South. The Northern economy was based on manufacturing raw goods and making them into products. .

What was the eminent domain and how did it affect the Native American population? - 

Is where the government can take the property for public use. The 5th Amendment to the Constitution requires that the owner be compensated for the land. Andrew Jackson used this policy to force the Indians off their land in the east and move west of the Mississippi River.

What was the Missouri Compromise? Describe what it did. 

It's a law that declared Missouri as a slave state, made Maine a free state, and banned slavery in lands of the Louisiana Purchase, north of 36 30 North latitude.

It admitted California as a free state, but in exchange, a stricter Fugitive Slave Act would be adopted nationally.

What was the purpose of missionary schools on Native American reservations? How did the Native Americans respond to these schools?   

To convert Indian children to Christianity and to teach them skills they could use for a job or trade. Some felt there was no need to change their way of life and preferred their own spiritual beliefs; others welcomed what the missionaries could give, including food and clothing.

Why did the U.S. government want to expand West? 

It was based on manifest destiny and to gain more territory.

How did the cotton gin affect slavery? 

The cotton gin helped separate seeds from sticky fibers thus making cotton more profitable. More slaves were needed to plan and harvest cotton (increased slavery). Free labor led to larger production which then led to more profit.

What was the belief of Manifest Destiny? What was the impact on Native Americans? On settlers?  

The idea of moving westward spread through the United States which then led to the idea that it was the destiny of the US to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The Native Americans were then forced to move west to Kansas and Oklahoma. (Land not =)

  1. -  Due to the agricultural revolution we turned from traveling to growing crops and staying where we were to grow them.

What was the European impact on Native American tribes? List both positive and negative effects.  

 The Europeans brought in new goods like ammunition but the biggest impact was the diseases they brought in to the Indians in which they did not have the immunity to deal with.

How did agriculture change the lives of those living on the plains during this period?

Planting seeds then leads to growing crops which leads to a steady supply of food. People then lived in one place rather than being nomadic.

Why was trade and bartering important to the Native American tribes? What were the benefits? What might be evidence to archaeologists that trading occurred?

Benefits- More advanced weapons, horses, introduction of new technology to make lives easier, evidence- artifacts would come from different areas (guns would not have been produced in KS gold/ seashells were not native in KS)

  1. - Wichita- Beehive shaped homes with grass lodges with a door in the front near the ground that rose slowly up to let in light. Pawnee- Round homes with grass on top of a wooden structure + packed soil. (Both have grasses but only one covers theirs in soil.

Why were some plains Indians nomadic and others permanent?

The nomadic peoples had a scarcity of water so they could not grow plants and instead hunted buffalo, whilst the peoples who grew crops had good soil. Due to the lack of meat and lack of water, they traded to provide for one another.
