Name the 4 main steps of the water cycle
Evaporation, Transpiration, Condensation, Precipitation
What is hail?
What is matter?
Matter is the "stuff" all things are made of.
Describe the process by which we can see objects.
Light travels from a light source, the light reflects off objects, and then is sensed by our eyes.
At what temperature does water freeze?
32 degrees fahrenheit
What IS precipitation?
Precipitation is any water that falls from clouds to the earth's surface.
What type of cloud does hail form in?
Thunderhead/Cumulonimbus
What is density?
Density is how much matter is within an object. aka how much "stuff" something is made of.
Why does the light bother your eyes when you've been in a dark room and the lights are suddenly turned on?
Our pupils dilate in dark environments to try to gather as much light as possible. When the lights come on and our pupils are dilated, too much light is allowed into our eyes.
3 iron
Name 3 different forms of precipitation.
Rain, snow, hail, sleet.
What time of year do hailstorms occur?
Summer and warm days in the fall and spring.
Which is more dense—helium or carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide
Describe why a red apple appears red?
When white light (which contains all colors of light) reflects off the apple all colors except red are absorbed
What is the most abundant gas in our atmosphere?
Nitrogen
DAILY DOUBLE
What do evaporation and condensation mean?
Why does water freeze as it gets higher into a cloud?
The higher you go, the thinner (less dense) the atmosphere is so the temperature is much colder.
How does temperature affect density?
When an object cools, the space between molecules contracts and the object becomes more dense. When it warms, the space between molecules expands and it becomes less dense.
What nerve transmits signals from the eyes to our brain?
Optic nerve
Correctly spell a word with at least 11 letters (can't be one you can see in this room or on this screen)
...
What is transpiration?
The process where plants release water vapor into the atmosphere.
What is the full process by which hail is formed?
Updrafts carry water droplets up into thunderhead clouds. After a certain height, the temperature is below freezing and the water turns to ice then drops back down. If the updrafts are strong enough, they can be carried upward again and grow larger. When they are too heavy they fall to the ground as hail.
You dive to the bottom of a pool and the temperature changes. How does it feel at the bottom of the pool and WHY?
What lobe of our brain interprets the signals transmitted from our eyes?
The occipital lobe
How many times has Mr. Wilson been gone from school this year?
4 times
