Why are well designed environments important in Early Childhood Education?

Well-designed environments support developmentally appropriate practices through:

  • Providing rich opportunities for play
  • Providing multiple opportunities for children to construct their knowledge through first-hand experiences
  • Allowing children the opportunity to practice skills
  • Providing materials the meet developmental levels
  • Providing materials that allow a child to increase complexity of learning over time.
100

If a child plays near other children often mirroring what they are doing, what type of play would this be called?

Parallel play

When designing a classroom, how would you design a block area?

- Blocks on shelf low to the ground.

- A lot of blocks should be available.

- A variety of blocks (different shapes and sizes) These can be separated into container based on their size to help show the relationship between the different blocks.

200

Explain what secure attachment is.

The world is a predictable with a warm and responsive caregiver. The child is secure to grow and explore.

200

Adults are always modeling behaviours, tone, and language. Do you believe that children are watching these behaviours and copying them?

Yes! Children are always watching and taking in all that you are doing. They will copy your behaviours, tone and language.

200

What is important information to have before designing an effective learning environment?

Prerequisites for designing an effective environment include the teacher’s knowledge of:

  • Child development and developmentally appropriate proactive
  • Individual children’s developmental level and interests
  • Children’s cultural backgrounds
  • The program philosophy
  • The teacher’s personal philosophy
200

Which of the following would be an example of cooperative play.

a. Two children play in a dramatic play area, one is cooking food, the other is playing with dolls.

b. A child plays with a basket of marbles, occasionally rolling one to another child.

c. Two children are building a barn out of blocks.

200

What do we know is true about a child's development during block play?

- Big blocks make children feel connected to the real world.

- Blocks bring children together.

- Block building with large blocks helps build large muscle control.

300
Explain what insecure attachment is.

This happens when the child’s needs are not met, and the child’s care is not consistent. Unfortunately, learning will not occur if the child is feeling insecure.

300

What actions can you do to create warmth within the classroom?

  • In voice
  • Sense of calm in the classroom
  • The lighting – plug in different lights instead of florescent lights (salt lamps are nice)
  • Personality and actions of teacher with children and coworkers/parents
  • The room looks beautiful/not too busy
  • Homelike
  • Be welcoming to everyone
  • Leave personal issues at home
  • Follow the child’s lead
  • Smile/eyes
300

What is included in designing the environment?

  • Design a floor plan
  • Think about safety
  • Think about what is wanted as the learning outcome
  • Think about different learning areas – how many shelves, where will it be placed, what type of floor will be used
  • Have lots of great materials – making sure to reflect cultures
  • Have schedules and transitions – should be predictable so there is time for learning and playing
300

If someone is having a hard time connecting with people, they can ask open-ended questions. What is an open-ended question?

Open-ended questions usually begin with “why,” “how,” or “what” and require the person responding to provide more than a single-word answer. (They can't respond with just a "yes" or "no".

300

How can a teacher acknowledge a child's block structure?

- Invite a supervisor/co-worker to come and admire their hard work.

- Take a photograph of the finished structure and display it in the classroom.

- Take a picture to send home to show family.

400

How can you create secure attachment with a child?

Attachment happens when someone responds to their cries by creating soothing, predictability and routine/schedule.

- Respond to child's needs

- Be warm towards the child

- Show interest in the child

- Follow a routine and schedule (this provides predictability)

400

What are schedules and why are they beneficial for children?

Schedules are very helpful! They help with time management and it gives the children a sense of security (predictability) for what is going to happen during their day.

Effective Schedules:

  • Respect children’s needs and meet the needs of families
  • Provide a balance of activities
  • Alternate quiet activities with active activities
  • Allow enough time for routines
  • Provide for planned transitions
  • Include a daily time, or times, to be outdoors
  • Include learning center time (at least 1 hour)
  • Include free play!
400
If you were to design a learning environment, what would you include?
  • Rich opportunities for play
  • Hands on experiences
  • Opportunities to practice skills
  • Range of developmentally appropriate levels because children all learn at different times.
  • Allow for increase of level of difficulty over time
  • The room send a message about what is important
400

Many of the materials in the classroom should be open-ended. Can you give an example of open-ended material?

Examples of open-ended material

A craft bin filled with various art supplies

Blocks

House corner

*any play that doesn't have a determined end.

Example of NOT open-ended- a puzzle. It has a determine end (once the puzzle is complete) so it is NOT open-ended.

400

Are blocks open-ended or closed-ended materials?

Open-ended materials

500

True or false

Typically, children who have received high quality care are more likely to have secure attachments?

True

500

Explain what transition are? Why are they important?

When schedules, transitions, and routines are appropriately planned and implemented, everyone knows what to expect, chaos is diminished, and learning is enhanced.

  • Transitions should be fun and carefully planned.
  • Transition times occur frequently in early childhood settings.
  • Typical programs may have 12-15 transition times per day, accounting for 20% to 30% of the child’s day.
  • With proper planning transition times can be effective, fun and educational.
500

How can you create physical warmth in the learning environment?

Physical warmth – room is the right temperature; they are dressed appropriately for indoors/outdoors

500
What is solitary play?

This is the stage when a child plays alone. They are not interested in playing with others quite yet.

500

Who can play with blocks?

Can everyone play with the same blocks?

Everyone can play with blocks. Children can learn about different cultures, economic statuses and disabilities through block play.

Not everyone can use the same blocks. Infants and toddlers would need to be careful with small blocks (Lego) and heavy blocks.
