In depth, describe The Captain's journey as an Other and the plan he executed
- Was the only one out of seven to get over the Wall
- Had a set of signals with lights, but it took five years before he was able to get a message back
- Connected with a wider network, including the countryman
- His larger network is connected to many different groups, but the Captain is unsure as to who they are outside of his people
Find a passage where a character’s emotions shift dramatically. What causes the shift?
- Middle to bottom of Page 178, which details Kavanaugh's thought process regarding the betrayal of the Captain. At first he wants to seek revenge by killing him, but then he becomes sad. This change is due to a "sense of loss."
- End of page 181 to start of page 182. Details James, who at the start appears very fatigued, groggy, and calm. Kavanaugh notes he was doing his own "calculations" (with regard to the light). Then he takes out the grenade and says he will use it if they feel they can't go on longer or they need to fight someone. This is due to his current mental health.
- Middle of page 184. Kavanaugh is reluctant and adamant that what they see is not land. A sentence or two later, he gives in due to "hope."
- luck (183)
-false hope/hope
- the idea of being unsafe/safe
Give 2 reasons as to why the Captain is kept alive
1) Kavanaugh believed that they were all going to die anyway, and it wouldn't make a difference if he died just before them
2) Only one to survive in a boat for a long period of time
3) Kavanaugh still views him as a natural born leader
4) They believe that there is no reason for him to lie because he knows they don't trust him
5) He's the only one with a plan (finding islands down south)
Name a passage that highlights the themes of trust and leadership
1) Passage about whether or not to trust the Captain.
1b) He is "so obviously a leader"
2) James wants to kill him because he does not trust him, but the group decides not to. This highlights the conflict between necessity and mistrust.
3) Passage the captain gives after Hifa asks if he is going to apologize. This highlights how much they blindly trust the elites/the regime in charge.
How will James's character develop going forward? How will he fit into the character dynamics of the group? Will he put the group in danger?
- mentions his political background and how he felt betrayed
- wanted to seek immediate revenge on the Captain
- mentions the grenade
