  1. List the four reasons the English wanted to establish colonies. Why were there thirteen colonies instead of just one? 

  1. Economy - France, Spain and Portugal had a lot of money from their colonies in America so the French wanted to be rich due to wars being expensive. 

  2. Competition - Spain and France were expanding their empires. Britain was in competition with them and wanted to prevent them from becoming more powerful. 

  3. Quality of Life - Cities were overcrowded and there was little farmland left.  

  4. Religious Freedom - Many religious groups in Britain were treated badly because of their beliefs.


All the colonies combined were called New England. The 13 colonies were divided into 3 regions: at the top were New England colonies, in the middle were the middle colonies and at the bottom were the Southern colonies.

  1. Who is Walter Raleigh and what did he attempt to accomplish? Why did he fail?

Walter Raleigh was the first English explorer to try to build a colony in North America. In 1585, he first tried to establish a colony but he failed. Then, he tried again in 1587 but still couldn’t establish a colony. The reason behind why he failed was that he and his men were not prepared for the harsh life of the North American wilderness.

The treaty let France keep control of the Fortress of Louisbourg on Ile Royale (Cape Breton, current day). The French colony of Acadia was given to the British. The British renamed the colony Nova Scotia.
