What is having themes that represent different cultures and ethnicities? This can include having diverse settings, characters, and even languages.
Why should I read these books?
What is having the ability to expand your understanding to the viewpoints of others? It celebrates seeing the differences that may be considered foreign to some people.
A book that features a 13 year old girl that has to leave her rich life in Mexico after her father's death and flees to California. While in America she has to work with her mother on a farm during the Great Depression.
What is "Esperanza Rising?"
A book about a Chinese American girl that struggles to balance learning American culture, mainly at school, while also taking pride in her own Chinese culture at home. She must embrace her new beginnings while also staying true to herself.
What is "The Year of the Dog?"
A story about a dark skinned middle school girl that gets talked down upon by other kids at her school and even her mother. Although, she is able to find comfort in her teacher who has scars of her own. Her teacher boosted her self confidence and she was able to stand up to her bullies.
