A kitten is a juvenile, or young, cat. Kittens are completely dependent upon their mother for the first weeks of life, and their eyes do not even open until 7 to 10 days after they are born. At two weeks, however, they are able to see and move around freely to explore their surroundings. At three to four weeks old, they are beginning to grow their first set of teeth, and can eat solid food. Cats are born predators, and even tiny kittens play fight to develop their hunting and stalking skills. Kittens need to stay with their mothers until they are at least twelve weeks old. At that time, they are ready to go to their new homes.
