Explain what is Weather Forecasting

Weather forecast is defined as “Prediction of Weather for the next few days to follow.”

Weather forecasting is foretelling the coming weather in advance. It may be defined as advance information about the probable weather conditions for few days to follow.

RED WARNING by PAGASA means

EVACUATE the premises and pack important things

100

What is the basic tool used by a weather forecaster like Kuya Kim Atienza? Why is it important to use this tool?

Weather Map. The weather map depicts the distribution patterns of atmospheric pressure, wind, temperature and humidity at the different levels of the atmosphere.

100

YELLOW WARNING from PAGASA means

MONITOR the weather condition

What is Long-range Forecasting (LRF)?

It is the forecast for more than 10 days, a month, a season. this is used to aid in the selection of crops, varieties and breeds, management of water resources, and management of farm inputs such as labor, machinery and seeds.

200

this is a combination of barographs, thermographs and hydrographs. this is an instrumental device designed to simultaneously record several meteorological phenomena, such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity and wind speed. The data being produced from this instrument are crucial for creating detailed weather maps  and for long-term climate studies.

Meteorographs

200

It is an optical telescope that measures the wind direction and speed at different heights in the atmosphere.

Theodolite

200

In the Philippines, what are the weather parameters with significant variation anf therefore capture the interest for weather forecasting?

Cloudiness, rainfall and wind.

200

Explain what is Nowcasting.

A weather forecast in which the details about the current weather and forecasts up to a few hours ahead (but less than 24 hours) are given.

It is a powerful tool in warning the public of hazardous, high-impact weather including tropical cyclones, thunderstorms and tornadoes which cause flash floods, lightning strikes and destructive winds.

200

This instrument produces signals indicating the altitude and azimuth of the telescope which are fed to a microprocessor.

Explain the significance of Weather Forecasting, specially in Agriculture and Fisheries.

Agriculture and Fisheries is mainly dependent of weather. If the weather is favorable, then crop production and fish catch will be higher. But if the weather is not under optimum/favorable range, then it will cause losses to crop production and low fish catch depending upon its intensity of abnormality.

300

What is Short-range Forecasting (SRF)?

It is the forecast and warning of weather elements hazardous to agriculture valid for 36 hours and an outlook for subsequent 3 days. This is issued twice a day based on synoptic conditions. This includes the cloud spread, rainfall distribution, heavy rainfall warning, maximum and minimum temperature, low pressure areas, etc.

As technology advanced, our scientists began to use more efficient equipment to collect and use additional data. One of these technological advances is the use of Weather Balloon. Explain how weather balloon is being used in weather forecasting.

¡Small balloon filled with Hydrogen and Helium.

¡Measure wind direction and speed at different heights in the atmosphere by using a theodolite.

¡Measures temperature, humidity and pressure at different heights using meteorographs.

¡Balloons meant to stay at a constant altitude for long periods of time are known as transondes.

What is Medium-range Forecasting (MRF)?

It is the forecast and warning of weather elements hazardous to agriculture valid for 3 days. The MRF is an objective and challenging one to weather scientists as it involves enormous numerical computations with expertise in weather sciences.

This is the primary source of upper-air data. This is tied to a weather balloons that launched in different locations. This instrument collects and sends back data every second about air pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction.

Radiosonde

400

What is a Doppler Weather RADAR?

Doppler Radar is the meteorologist’s window into observing severe storms.

Doppler Radar detects all types of precipitation, the rotation of thunderstorm clouds, airborne tornado debris, and wind strength and direction.

The faster the raindrops move towards the RADAR, the higher will be the frequency of the microwave reflected from raindrops.

400

How is a weather forecast disseminated?

The forecast are aired in various radio stations by telephone or sent by telefax machines a few minutes after completion and are immediately sent to the weather stations nationwide. Copies are also furnished to different media outlets without delay.

400

This instrument is used as a wind profiler and measure wind speed at various heights above the ground. This is also used to calculate the wind speed by measuring the scattering of sound waves by atmospheric turbulence.

Sonic Detection and Ranging (SODAR)

400

Explain how satellites from space used as an instrument in forecasting weather.

¡For viewing large weather systems on world wide scale; Weather satellites monitor Earth from space, collecting observational data that our scientists analyze.
