What was the cause of Deafness in the Early Years?
In early years, administrators kept records of causes of Deafness in children and these are: spinal meningitis, scarlet fever, 6 cases of “sickness from fright” were listed, a swallow of tobacco was one of the case. One case had a woman claiming that a servant’s piercing shriek made the baby’s ear close up. Some schools reported that sore heads, worms, lung fever, scrofula all caused Deafness.
