While June is widely recognized as Pride Month in the United States, commemorating the Stonewall Uprising, some cities, like Charleston, choose to host their Pride events in October. This allows for a more inclusive celebration that aligns with the broader recognition of LGBTQ+ history and culture.

In 1957, Kameny was dismissed from his position as an astronomer in the U.S. Army's Army Map Service in Washington, D.C., because of his homosexuality,leading him to begin "a Herculean struggle with the American establishment" that would "spearhead a new period of militancy in the homosexual rights movement of the early 1960s".

Kameny formally appealed his firing by the U.S. Civil Service Commission. Although unsuccessful, the proceeding was notable as the first known civil rights claim based on sexual orientation pursued in a U.S. court.

Dallas: The first pride parade took place in 1972 starting with roughly 250 people and ended with a crowd of 3,000.

Astronaut Sally Ride set foot in space in 1983 after completing a mission for NASA aboard Space Shuttle Challenger. After ending her career as an astronaut, Ride dedicated her life to getting kids to engage in science and teaching physics at the University of California, San Diego. Ride kept her personal life private throughout her life, but after her death in 2012, it was revealed she had been in a romantic relationship with her business partner Tam O’Shaughnessy, a woman, for over 27 years.

Founded in 1977, this is the oldest LGBTQIA+ organization in Arizona. 

Tuscson Pride. It began as a memorial for Richard Heakin, a young gay man murdered in 1976, and has evolved into a large annual event with a parade and festival.

She is regarded as the mother of the gay rights movement. 

Barbara Gittings: born in Vienna, Austria, in 1932.

In 1958, while commuting from Philadelphia, she started the New York chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB). This was the nation’s first lesbian civil rights organization in the United States.

Gittings enlisted activists from New York, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia for the first public demonstrations for gay and lesbian equality. From 1965 to 1969, in front of Independence Hall every July 4th, protests known as Annual Reminders paved the way for the Stonewall riot in 1969.
