Why was it hard for Nicodemus to understand Jesus when He said you MUST BE born again? (Hint:Nicodemus thought he was assured salvation)

Jesus’ reply to Nicodemus shattered the Jewish assumption that their racial identity — their old birth — Abraham’s dependents (Israel) assured them a place in God’s Kingdom. Jesus made it plain that a man’s first birth does not assure him of the kingdom; only being born again gives this assurance.

Nicodemus knew the Old Testament very well, but he couldn‘t understand Jesus. - Is knowing the Bible and having a relationship with Jesus the same thing?

Explain

The Jewish teacher knew the Bible well. .. but didn’t understand fully what it said about the Jesus, the Messiah.  - intellectual knowledge doesn’t assure your salvation. You should know the Bible. But knowing the Bible and having a relationship with Jesus are different. We need to have a relationship with the One whom the Bible reveals so we can receive salvation.

Why do some people choose to live in the darkness and not in the light?

  • People like doing things that go against what God‘s word says. Lying, stealing, desiring things that God doesn’t want us to have, being mean to other people. Many people don’t want their lives, exposed to God‘s light because they’re afraid of what will be revealed. They don’t want to change their ways. Sometimes we have these people around us in our life. And we shouldn’t be surprised when these people don’t like that we like to obey God and do what is right, because they’re afraid that the light in us, that the light in you guys, will expose some of the darkness in their lives. Sometimes those people will push you away. But we don’t get discouraged, we keep praying that they will come to see how much better it is to live in the light than in darkness.
