The Hound was covered in phosporous, making it glow - even in the dark. Sir Charles had a weak heart, so he literally got "scared to death".
The hound chased Sir Charles but only ran on the grass, leaving no paw prints as it ran. It stopped next to the body of Sir Charles, but left a paw print there before running back.
