O godzinie 13:00 podchorążowie z 1. i 2. plutonu wyciągnęli broń osobistą (karabiny M762 Beryl) ze zbrojowni (armoury). O godzinie 13:30 dotarli na strzelnicę, zebrali się w pobliżu punktu amunicyjnego i przygotowywali się do treningu. Nagle, zanim oficer strzelnicy wydał rozkaz zajęcia pozycji i strzelania do celów, szeregowy Velocity Muzzle nacisnął spust i zastrzelił swojego przyjaciela, kaprala Donalda Notmyguna, który znajdował się na strzelnicy przed linią ognia (down range in front of the firing lane). A field dressing was applied on the wound at the scene and an ambulance and the Military Police were called immediately.

Trzej żołnierze nie przestrzegali szeregu podstawowych środków bezpieczeństwa. Wracali do domu z tego samego miejsca o tej samej porze w każdy piątkowy wieczór. Nie zmieniali trasy. Ponadto podróżowali jednym samochodem; nie mieli pojazdu zapasowego na wypadek awarii lub podobnych incydentów. Nie zachowali dyskrecji, poruszając się wyraźnie oznakowanym wojskowym landroverem. Kapral Notmygun doznał poważnych obrażeń podbrzusza i został przetransportowany do Szpitala Wojskowego, gdzie przeszedł operację ratującą życie i spodziewany jest jego pełny powrót do zdrowia. Cpl Notmygun suffered serious injuries to his lower abdomen, he was transported to the Military Hospital where he underwent a life-saving surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. Pte Muzzle was clearly in a state of shock and had to be given psychological counselling. The range officer as well as all cadets from 1 and 2 Platoons have also been provided with professional help by a trauma therapist. The Military Police have interrogated the witnesses and are conducting an investigation.
