Indirect characterization shows the traits through STEAL and makes the reader infer.

Brownlow means a small hill. His character symbolizes hope; a small uphill in Oliver's life.

200

Infer this line:

“She led him down an alleyway, Bill Sikes was standing in the shadows waiting for them.”

This is a parallel to when Dodger brought Oliver through the alleyway. Nancy was leading him through it again. The last time it brought him to Fagin in which his life turned downward and to the life of thievery. This time it lead him to Bill Sikes who will once again lead him to a life of crime and make his life go downhill.

Make an Inference:

Oliver ate his supper quickly. He pulled the meat from the bone, chewed off the extra bits of fat, and sucked out the last of the flavor.

This was when Charlotte gave Oliver the scrap of meat they actually had for the dog. This showed how badly the workhouse underfed the children. Meat also symbolizes greed. I think a small amount of meat could raise a spirit of greed to anyone. It's as in we are all power hungry and hungry for money. All the more to the poor.

400

When was blanket used in the story? How were the blankets used differently? What could the blankets symbolize?

Blankets in Oliver Twist show how Oliver is treated. Thin, rough blankets in the workhouse symbolize neglect, while warm, soft blankets in kind homes symbolize care and safety.

In addition, blanket were also used in Fagin's Den but for the wrong purpose: to cover the windows. This could represent their "comfort" as to hiding their criminal life. Comfort is being used in a wrong way.

400

What was the FULL mystery of Oliver Twist according to the resolution of the novel?

Mr. Brownlow's friend, Edwin Leeford, fell in love with Agnes and they both had Oliver. However, Edwin already had a son, Monks, from his first family. Agnes also had a sister who ended up being an orphan after her sister and father died: Rose. So Rose is Oliver's aunt and Monks is Oliver's half brother. Mr. Brownlow is close friends with Oliver's dad.

400

Mr. Bumble and Mrs. Bumble are thieves in some way. How are they thieves? Give atleast 1 example.

In the beginning of the book, it tells us that the Bumbles takes money that are meant for the children and pockets them. They even watered down the gruel so that they can have "more food" but spend less.

500

Compare and Contrast Mr. Bumble and Fagin. How are they similar? How are they different?

Both use their power to abuse children (make money for them). The only difference may be their social class in which Mr. Bumble has class which Fagin is a criminal. Mr. Bumble uses his power to control the children, but Fagin uses manipulation and flattery to control the children.

Setting plays a major role in Oliver Twist. In the last setting, the place was describes to have a beautiful garden and rose patterned walls. How does this help enhance the meaning of the story. Use situational examples from the book to explain your answer.

The imagery of a garden and flowers around emphasizes the feeling of hope and growth as if blooming once again from death. Oliver had just undergo the deepest down in his life where he was kidnapped and forced to commit crime, but now he is going to be able to bloom again and grow through Mrs. Maylie and Rose.

500

Was Fagin a flat or round character? Why? Give Examples.

Fagin is a round character.

Fagin is both charming (when he first met Oliver he was very accommodating) but also frightening (when he questioned Oliver after Oliver sad him with his jewels). Fagin also showed his weak side when he shows fear towards Bill such as when he mistakenly kind of blackmailed Bill and Bill got angry, Fagin was scared.

Explain the plot diagram.

It starts off with an introduction, exposition, where we are introduces with the characters and the setting.

Then we have our conflict where we are introduced to the conflict of the story.

The rising action is all the events that happen before reaching the climax where there is a twist in the story.

After the climax we have the falling action that later leads to the resolution.

The resolution can be solved, or open ended.
