Describe Twin.

How is he seen by Mami?. How is he seen by Xiomara?

Twin the nickname for Xiomara's twin brother.

Mami adores Twin, as he is a talent in the church with his knowledge of the Bible, and his status as an altar boy. According to Xiomara, she puts less pressure on him.

What kind of school does Xiomara go to? How is it described.

What kind of school does Twin go to?

Xiomara goes to a neighborhood public school in Harlem called Chisholm. The reputation is that it has a history of gang fights and drug deals. Although this is not the case anymore, the image stands the same.

Twin goes to a fancy school for students with high test scores. It is very nice and well-funded.

What scarring event did Xiomara experience in 5th grade? How did Mami React?

Xiomara had her first period, so she bought tampons and struggled to use them to stop the blood. Mami saw and was horrified, insisting that tampons were for whores and assuming that Xiomara was not a virgin. She backhanded Xiomara across the face in her anger.

Why does Mami want Xiomara to join the church?

What about Mami's past dreams would influence her to pressure Xiomara in this way?

Mami has high expectations for Xiomara; she wants Xiomara to be focused on religion as a way of living vicariously through her. When Mami lived in DR, she wanted to be a nun, however, her family pressured her into moving to the US and marrying, which made it impossible for her to be totally devoted to Christ in the way she wanted.

Why does Xiomara like her teacher Ms. Galiano? What is it about writing poetry that makes it so important to Xiomara?

Xiomara believes Ms. Galiano actually wants to know about her through the writing assignments.

Writing helps her express the feelings and thoughts she wouldn't be able to under the pressure of others, especially Mami.

In the poem "It Happens", why does Xiomara repeat herself so much?

What was the stressful situation that inspired that poem? (Hint: Caridad and Twin were there as witnesses)

She repeats herself constantly in order to illustrate the multiple times in which she has felt herself being harassed by men. She forces the reader into her mindset, as they feel annoyed and irritated at the unending cycle of trauma.

The situation that inspired the poem was an encounter with a basketball player at Goat Park. The player confronted Xiomara while grabbing his crotch, sexually harassing her.

In "How I Feel About Attention" Why does Xiomara create an Allusion to Medusa? What does she want to learn from her?

It's likely she relates to Medusa's harassment from Posiedon, as well as the reception of blame from a mother figure (Athena).

She would like to know how to "turn men to stone", likely a metaphor for one's ability to stand up for themself and push away unwanted threats.
