Classroom Materials & Personal Items

Pencils

4 pencils in the materials caddy at all times (tape matching the color of the table, one for each seat number). Pencils belong to the seat, not the person. It’s important to take care of the pencils so you don’t ruin them for yourself or anyone else. They won’t be replaced if someone breaks or ruins them.

If your pencil is dull or broken, raise hand signal, do not leave your seat.

When Ms. Pine says you can (1) bring your dull or broken pencil to the student service station, (2) put it in the “dull” cup, (3) take a sharp pencil that matches your seat from the “sharp” cup, and (4) return to your seat.

Anytime you leave your seat, put your pencil back in the materials caddy

Erasers

4 erasers in the materials caddy at all times (table color and seat number written on each). Erasers belong to the seat, not the person. It’s important to take care of the erasers so they aren’t ruined for yourself or anyone else. They won’t be replaced if someone breaks or ruins them.

Computers

(1) Walk quickly, quietly, and safely over to the Chromebook cart, (2) unplug charger from your Chromebook and take your Chromebook out of the cart, (3) walk with two hands holding your Chromebook back to your seat quickly, quietly, and safely, (4) open your Chromebook, log in, and immediately get started on iReady.

If Ms. Pine calls for the class’ attention, “taco” your computer

If you are off task on your computer, it will be taken away for the rest of the week and you will have to do your iReady minutes during Choice Time and Fun Friday.

When it’s time to put computers away: (1) immediately close your computer, (2) walk with two hands holding your Chromebook back to the cart, (3) be patient while you wait your turn to put your Chromebook away, (4) put your Chromebook back in its spot and plug it in.

Desks

Organize your desk like this every day

The desk fairy will come by every so often to give respect tickets to students who keep their desks organized

Only keep these things in your desk, anything else will be confiscated

Sweaters

If you have your sweater with you in the classroom, your two options are to wear the sweater (normal, or tied around your waist), or hang it on the back of your chair.

If you make a different choice, I will assume the sweater is a toy and I will take it. You will get it back at the end of the day.

Your eyes must be visible to me at all times. I don’t mind if you need to keep your head warm, but if I can’t see your eyes I will ask you to remove your hat or hoodie.

Shared Classroom Materials

If you show me that you can show respect to these shared classroom materials all week, I will introduce another shared classroom material (crayons). Every week, there will be a chance to earn back another shared classroom material, so we can do more creative and exciting activities and projects.

Whiteboards, Dry Erase Markers, and Dry Erase Erasers

Water

Your water bottle lives in the Hydration Station, you may not take your water bottle back to your desk

Once you get a “yes” signal to get water, you may walk quickly, quietly, and safely to the Hydration Station and drink your water at the Hydration Station

When you are done, secure the cap on your water bottle, put it back in the Hydration Station, and walk quickly, quietly, and safely back to your seat

Students will not be allowed to go get water at the water fountain during class

If you forgot your water bottle outside in your backpack, you will have to wait until recess, lunch, or after school to get it

If you forgot to bring your water bottle to school, you will have to drink water from the fountain during recess, lunch, after PE, and after school

If you don’t have a water bottle at home to bring to school, talk to Ms. Pine and she will arrange getting one water bottle for you (if you lose that one she will not be getting you another)

Make sure you take your water bottle from the Hydration Station out with you during recess and lunch and make sure to put it straight back in the Hydration Station when you get back to the classroom

Tissue

When you get a “yes” signal, you should walk quickly, quietly, and safely to the Student Service Station, grab a tissue, and blow your nose

When you are done, throw your tissue in the trash can and walk quickly, quietly, and safely back to your seat

Community Circle

Ms. Pine will call on clean, quiet tables to come sit in a circle on the rug

• Respect the talking piece - only person speaking is the one holding the talking piece
• Speak with your heart - This means speaking for yourself, talking about what is true for you based on your own experiences. Only share what makes you feel comfortable. Tell the truth. Share without fear of judgment.
• Listen with your heart - Practice empathy. Try to understand someone else’s perspective
• Speak with respect - Hurtful words should never be used. It is best to use affective statements (“I” statements) when speaking one’s truths.
• Listen with respect - Respond without speaking. Focus on the speaker. Make sure that your body language reflects being respectful.
• Remain in the circle - physically and mentally
• Honor privacy - Things shared in the circle should remain in the circle. However, teachers are mandated reporters. What this means is that if you share information that someone has put you in danger then teachers have a legal responsibility to report this information to keep you safe.

Pom Pom Prize

For each part of the day that the whole class is following directions and our classroom procedures, you will earn a pom pom.

If the class has 5 pom poms by the time that the 2nd grade math lesson is over, we will do a brain break video.

If the class reaches 10 pom poms by the time that Inner Explorer is over, we will do Choice Time.

If the class reaches 15 pom poms in a day, we will have a dance party with Ms. Pine as the DJ.

Behavior Charts

First thing in the morning: Turn in yesterday’s chart on your way in the door. Write your name, the date, your daily goal, and your reward (choose between Class Dojo points and Respect Tickets) on your new chart while you eat your breakfast

When you get a reminder: immediately cross out the “2” on your chart, if it’s your second reminder, cross out the “1”. If you are crossing out the “1”, there is an immediate natural consequence. If it’s your third reminder, cross out the “0”, if you are crossing out the zero, you will be filling out a think sheet. If it’s your fourth reminder, cross out the “-” next to the “0”, if you are crossing out the “-”, your think sheet will be going home.

During Clean-up (right before recess, lunch, and the end of the school day): circle the highest number that is not crossed out in each section

End of the day: put it in your take-home folder and give it to your parent when you get home. After your parent signs it, glue it in the second page of your homework packet.

You will get your reward the day after you turn in your homework packet. You can redeem your ClassDojo points every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the first 10 minutes of recess. If you do not turn in your chart, I will contact your family.

Entering the Classroom

Only a water bottle (and Take-Home folder in the mornings) in your hands. If Ms. Pine sees you with an item from home or the yard inside the classroom, she will take it until the end of the day.

Ms. Pine (morning) or the star of the week (after recess and lunch) greets everyone (choose between a high five, wave, or hug) as they enter the door.

**In the morning** Turn in homework and behavior chart, put Take-Home folder in mailbox, put water bottle in the Hydration Station, and pick up breakfast (hot item or cereal, fruit or juice, milk, tray, and spork)

**After recess** put water bottle in the Hydration Station, get your computer from the cart and get started on iReady at your desk

**After lunch** put water bottle in the Hydration Station, sit down at your desk and put your head down or do the shark fin

Go straight to your desk quickly, quietly, and safely

Clean Up

• Immediately start cleaning up when the clean up song goes on (English, Spanish, End of Day)
• Must be finished cleaning, quiet, and in your seat by the time the song is over
• Ms. Pine will dismiss clean, quiet tables to line up outside or transition to the next activity
  • Before CKLA time: 2nd graders move a name tag from Ms. Brousseau’s class in front of their own and line up outside to walk to Ms. Nazarian’s room and 3rd Graders grab their CKLA materials and go back to their seats
  • Math Check-in Point: go to a brain break spot if brain break was earned or get independent math work materials if it was not earned (I will tape out brain break spots)
  • Before Lunch on Mondays: grab library book and Spanish folder and put it in library bin on the way out the door
  • End of Day: Backpack on back, chair on desk, mail & behavior chart in take home folder in backpack, standing in front of chair. After school & Kinder Gate students dismissed to after school program/Kinder Gate, Gulana Gate students line up

Exit the classroom quickly, quietly, and safely when it is your turn.

Grab your snack and line up along the line in the concrete facing the hallway intersection.

Feet facing forward (directly behind the person in front of you but not too close), hands by side, lips zipped together (no talking or playing after the song).

Stopping points on the way back to the classroom: plant by Ms. Nazarian’s room, trash can in front of Ms. Jimenez’s room

Restroom

When you get a “yes” signal, you and your partner should walk quickly, quietly, and safely to the Student Service Station, log out for the restroom, and walk quickly, quietly, and safely to the restroom

When you return, you and your partner should sign back in and walk quickly, quietly, and safely to your desks

You may only go to the restroom during independent work time, and you will be responsible for the work you miss while you are gone. If you don’t finish it during the time you are given, you may have to do it during Choice Time or Fun Friday

You may only go to the restroom with your table partner, unless Ms. Pine sends you with someone else.

You must take 4 minutes or less to go, use the restroom, and come back.

You must sign out and sign back in.

If you take more than 4 minutes or you forget to sign back in, you will get one reminder, then Ms. Pine will be contacting your parents.If you take more than 4 minutes or you forget to sign back in after Ms. Pine contacts your parents, you will not be allowed to go to the restroom during class time for the rest of the week

Band-aid/Ice pack/Nurse

If you need a band-aid or an ice pack, Ms. Pine, Mr. Garcia, or Ms. Navarro will get it for you and give it to you to use

If you are not bleeding you will not get a band-aid

If you need to go to the nurse, Ms. Pine will write you a nurse note and you will take your table group (or all except one if you’re at a table of 4) to the nurse

Peace Corner

When you get a “yes” signal, you should walk quickly, quietly, and safely to the Peace Corner

When you get to the Peace Corner, you should sign in, flip the sign to the emotion you are feeling, and flip the timer

The Peace Corner is a quiet and peaceful place, if you are making noise, talking, or playing around in the peace corner, you will be asked to leave

When your time is up, clean up any tools you used and return to your seat. If you do not follow the timer, you will not be allowed back into the Peace Corner for the rest of the week

Ciencias Research Project Independent Work Routine

• When your table is called, you will pull out your Spanish folder, take out your Ciencias Research Project packet and library book and work on your project
• Follow the written directions on the packet
• If you have a question, raise your hand and Ms. Navarro will come to help you
• If you need to translate a word, raise the dictionary symbol and Ms. Pine or Ms. Navarro will send you to:
  • go to the breakfast table with your packet and pencil
  • flip the 5 minute timer
  • look up the word in the dictionary
  • write it into your project
• Return to your seat before the 5 minutes is up

Run 3 laps around the field (not on or across it, feet on ground at all times)

Pick a corner on the four-square courts and stand on it (stick to your spot once you pick it)

• After read-aloud is over, sit at the seat where your Spanish folder is and begin working on your project
  • Ms. Pine will pull students to conference about their project and Ms. Prado will help you pick/check out books that will help you with your project
  • Raise your hand to get up to get a book, only 3 students up at a time, 5 minute maximum time
• When library time is up,  line up at the door in line order with your Spanish folder and library book in your hands

• Instructions for how to get started on your test will be on the board
