The Compromise of 1850 created tension by trying to make both sides happy which only made them more mad. Explain the situation with tariffs for the North, and the different situation with the South. Work for your points.

The North favored high protective tariffs to protect its factories from cheap British competition because they were industrialized. The South on the other hand was based on agriculture, this forced them to pay higher prices for manufactured goods and threatened their cotton exports. This alone caused tension, and the South hated tariffs.

Evidence from pages 3 and 4 in the packet.

Abraham Lincoln won the election because Lincoln got a majority vote from the Northern states, EVEN though he didn't get any votes from the South. He won by 40% He got a majority vote from the North, but what happened is the South split their votes on 2 different guys, so Lincoln won by majority.
