True or false - for projects with roof work, it is standard practice for all installers to require a copy of the final roof inspection before scheduling the solar install.

False - empower does it that way, but PowerUp will schedule when you tell them the roof is done, no proof required

Explain in 3 sentences or less why NEM 2.0 is worse than NEM 1.0.

1.0 gets you a 1-1 exchange with the grid and time of day doesn’t matter. 2.0 gets you a retail rate credit, which is lower during the day when you sell it and higher in the evening when you buy it.

If you’re installing on a rental property, be cautious with Goodleap, which may require proof of occupancy. What condition will trigger an occupancy review? What documentation satisfies the requirement?

If the UB name doesn’t match the names on title, POO will be required.

Explain why a 200A sub panel is just as good as a 200A MPU when you’re going solar.

The service feed capacity only matters in regard to pulling power from the grid, which you don’t do much of with solar. 90+% of your power is being generated, stored & consumed on site and will never pass through the service feed.

300

For projects with MPU, at what point in the process does the project move into install scheduling for the solar panels?

Once the meter spot is done, the utility provides a work order. Then they schedule the MPU. Once the MPU is *scheduled* (doesn’t need to be done), the project will move to scheduling.

What are the financing and equipment options for a truly off-grid system that does not connect to a utility for net metering?

Cash only. Enphase only (no Tesla).

The maximum height that a battery can be mounted above the ground

6.5 feet

Does a battery add to savings in IID (imperial irrigation district) and why or why not?

No because there is no TOU. All solar power that hits the grid is credited at 30% of retail regardless of time of day. Due to the desert climate, thousands of extra kWh’s are produced in the winter & spring and credited at 30%. Then the home buys a bunch of power in the summer at full price. Battery doesn’t help this.

Let’s say there is a property with 3 separate electric meters on one multimeter panel. None of them have solar yet. Each unit is an ADU in its own small detached structure. The HO wants to solarize all 3 units with Lightreach. Explain why this won’t work due to Lightreach’s rules.

Lightreach doesn’t allow second systems except in LADWP. However they do not discriminate between different electric meters on the same panel. If there is solar on even 1 meter, Lightreach will not approve another solar project on the same panel, even if it’s a first system on another meter. (Yes, it is as stupid as it sounds.) So they could do 1 unit with LR but would not be able to do the other 2.

A roof where the tiles themselves are made of metal has 2 common names - Calpak / tin tile. This is not to be confused with the other 2 types of metal roof! What are they?

Standing seam metal roof, raised metal roof

If you have a bad panel on underground lines, how does the installer determine whether or not an MPU is possible without trenching?

SDGE meter spot inspection provides a work order detailing what is required for a panel upgrade

When you install a battery in the garage, a heat sensor & CO detector are always required. Sometimes they also require cement posts around the battery, so it can’t be hit with a car. What are these posts called and when are they required?

Bollards.

When the battery is placed on the back wall as opposed to the side walls.

500

Does a battery help with savings in LADWP (Los Angeles department of water and power) and why or why not?

Trick question - LADWP is equivalent to NEM 2.0, so no batteries are required, if you oversize the system a little bit. However, it’s a TOU utility so battery load shifting still helps add a little bit to savings.

Goodleap is the only PPA that will service mobile home parks. However there are certain conditions that the mobile home must meet for Goodleap approval - what are they? (3 things)

*permanent foundation (no stilts or wheels)

*has its own utility meter & account (no electric bill from the trailer park)

*has a conventional roof with decking + underlayment + shingle / comp (no metal trailer roofs)
