The fur trade contributed to economic development because for the First Nations and Europeans they both wanted something that the other had. First Nations valued metals such as knives, axes and guns while the Europeans wanted lots of furs. Because the Europeans greatly wanted furs they were constantly exploring farther into the interior of Canada where they mapped rivers, built forts and created supply lines.
